Online Course of Lectures on "Integrated Water Resources Management in the Climate Change Conditions: Ukrainian Experience" Print

130514 gwp_online_lecture_in_kyiv_university_tMay 14, 2013, Kyiv — In May 2013, MAMA-86 published online a freely-accessible course of lectures on "Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Climate Change Conditions: Ukrainian Experience." The course was initiated by GWP Ukraine with support from GWP Central and Eastern Europe. It is aimed at advancing the theory and practice of IWRM adapted to specific natural phenomena in Ukraine, as well as presenting achievements Ukrainian water experts in order to spread their experience both in Ukraine and abroad, primarily for GWP colleagues in the region of CEE, Caucasus, and Central Asia (for this reason, the course was prepared in Russian with English subtitles).

The course is presently comprises three lectures: the introductory lecture by GWP Ukraine expert Andriy Demydenko on "Features of the Transition to the IWRM in Post-Soviet Countries," the lecture by Dr. Serhiy Afanasyev from the Institute of Hydrobiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on "EU Water Framework Directive: General Principles and Methodology for Ecological Status Assessment," and the lecture by Prof. Oleksandr Obodovsky, Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University, on "Hydromorphological Assessment of River Water Bodies." On May 14, 2013, with assistance of Prof. Obodovsky, there was the first presentation of the course to a group of Master students, postgraduates, and staff of the Hydrology and Hydroecology Faculty at the Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University's Geographic Department.

The Global Water Partnership (GWP) was founded in 1996 to foster integrated water resources management. GWP is a nonprofit network currently composed of 2,800 partner organizations in 167 countries.

GWP Ukraine was established in 2006, and it is part of the Regional Water Partnership – GWP Central and Eastern Europe. MAMA-86 was one of the founders of the partnership in Ukraine, and since April 2012 performs the representative and administrative functions of the Water Partnership of Ukraine.
