Sustainable Development for All:
ecological sanitation and waste-(water) management in rural areas
of Ukraine
This project is implementing in the framework of "Water
and sanitation" Program in the cooperation with Women
of Europe for Common Future (WECF) with sponsorship of private French
Foundation Ensemble.
Ukrainian participants of the project: "ÌÀÌÀ-86-Odesa", "MÀÌÀ-86-Sevastopol",
"MÀÌÀ-86-Ternopil".
Project is coordinated by the Central office of MAMA-86 in Kyiv.
The term of implementation: 1 September 2005 — 31 August 2006.
The project is aimed on direct improving the living conditions of the poor
in rural areas by developing access to affordable hygiene and sanitation (ecological
sanitation) and improved waste-(water) management with public participation
and development of all interested parties collaboration.
The tasks of project:
- To attract attention to the problems of surface and groundwater, which
in many places is used as drinking water — and thus to improve
the ecological and health situation in rural areas.
- To conduct 2 pilot projects in 2 villages:
- Safe water supply;
- Ecosanitation — the building of ecotoilets.
- Build capacity of local rural communities (particularly, women’s ones)
for the purpose of:
- to raise public participation in the economic, social and environmental
development in rural areas;
- to promote local community interests in decision making process on
the local level.
The project has been implementing in 2 villages:
- Village Stepan³vka, Odesa Oblast;
- Village Peredovîe (natural reserve, with youth summer camp), Baydarska
valley, Crimea.
The project focuses on:
- An informational activity on national and local levels (seminars-trainings)
on drinking-water and water-supply security, water sources protection,
hygiene and ecosanitation with participation of leading specialists from
Norway, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands and Ukraine. It will promote a dissemination
of ecosanitation ideas on local, national on regional levels.
- The implementing of pilot projects in 2 villages Odesa and Sevastopol
Oblasts to solve the local sanitation problems based on introduction of
the effective technical solution, which must meet the requirements:
- Technically effective;
- Saving resources;
- Environmentally friendly;
- Affordable to the local community.
- An information gathering about ecosan technologies perspectives in Ukraine:
creation of database on legal basis on wastewater management relevant to
introduction of ecosanitation technologies, focused on human excrements
recycling, sanitation equipment market research.
The project is continuing activity on implementation of ecosanitation as
a new approach to wastewater managment in Ukraine and it is based on the practical
experience and knowledge received before, during Water Campaign MAMA-86, and
joint MAMA-86 and WECF project "Co-operation
for Sustainable Rural Development".
Progress of project:
13th of June 2006 — the construction of dry ecosan toilet was finished
in the youth summer camp near v. Peredovoe in Crimea, Ukraine. The main
eco-toilet characteristics are:
- Both urine and feaces are separately collected and can be used as excellent
organic fertilizers;
- Rain harvesting technology is used for technical purposes.

10—20th of May 2006 — the workshop-training on household ecosan
toilet building took place in village Stepanivka, Odesa Oblast. The 46 participants
from local dwellers attended the 2 trainings and 1 eco-san toilet was built
for the family in Stepanovka village. The trainer for this workshop was invited
from the Hamburg Environment University (TUHH). 2 MAMA-86 representatives
from Nizhyn and Yaremche participated in this workshop to built their knowledge
and capacity to be the local trainers for the future projects on ecosan in Ukraine.
10—26th of May 2006 — Stefan Deegener, an ecosan expert of Hamburg
Environment University (TUHH) visited Stepanovka, Peredovoe and Gozhuly villages
to consult on pilot projects implementation and to carry out the workshop-training
in v. Stepanivka.
5—20th of May 2006 — the final tender for the eco-toilet
construction company for rural school in village Stepanovka (Odesa Oblast)
was conducted.
15—25th of March 2006 — information actions devoted the World Water
Day 2006 and a Sanitation and Hygiene Week were conducted in Kyiv, Sevastopol and Odesa.
23—25th of March 2006 — MAMA-86-Sevastopol conducted an ecological
action and information campaign devoted World Water Day 2006 »»».
23th of March 2006 — MAMA-86-Odesa celebrated World Water Day 2006
in v. Stepanivka, Odesa Oblast. In the frame of celebration the Round Table
"Ecological Education is a Basis of Youth’s World View development" and
the costumed performance devoted water theme with children participation took
place »»».
23th of March 2006 — the eco-toilet basement building was started
with participation of builders and volunteers in Peredovoe, Crimea (see photo).

March 2006 — Water Monitoring Program and children’s water monitoring
on nitrates contamination program was launched in Stepanovka Village Council,
Odesa Oblast.
March 2006 — the permit on eco-toilet building in v. Stepanovka, Odesa
Oblast was obtained.
21st of February 2006 — the confirmation letter on eco-toilet construction
in v. Peredovoe was received by MAMA-86-Sevastopol. It was signed by Director
of Kuybyshevskiy State Forestry Enterprise.
4th of February 2006 — the building company was chosen for eco-toilet
construction in v. Peredovoe, Crimea. And the Contract was signed by this
company and MAMA-86-Sevastopol.
February 2006 — eco-toilet building expertise was conducted in v. Stepanivka,
Odesa Oblast.
February 2006 — MAMA-86-Odesa conducted 2 trainings in v. Stepanivka,
Odesa Oblast: on Internet use for women-leaders and teachers and pupils-volunteers
"How to conduct express test of drinking water sample".
January 2006 — The booklet "Ecosanitation is a new approach on
wastewater management in Ukraine" was prepared and designed for publication
by "ÌÀÌÀ-86" »»».
January 2006 — 9 water samples from the villages of Stepanovka Village
Council (Odesa Oblast) were sent to analyze to the laboratory of Munich (Germany).
10—20 January 2006 — the series of consultations between "ÌÀÌÀ-86" representatives
and leading specialists on hygiene and sanitation, waste-water management,
solution of sewage water system problems in rural areas, of 'Ukrvodproekt',
Marzeev Institute of hygiene and ecological medicine as to outlooks and problems
of ecosanitation implementation in Ukraine.
December 2005 — the information centre was set up in v. Stepanivka,
Odesa. It was equipped with telephone line, fax and Internet and first training
for women-leaders on Internet use was held.
28—29th of December — the working meeting was held with Stepanivka
villagers by MAMA-86-Odesa, which presented the project, eco-toilet design
and social survey results.
10—25th of December 2005 — social survey on a theme "Natural
Water Resources Protection Problems in the Stepanivka Village Council of Odesa
Oblast" was run by "Socis-Ukraine" and expert Alexander Stegniy.
The mass survey was conducted in 5 villages of the Odessa Oblast (486 respondents).
December 2005 — the administrative decision as to land allocation
for ecosan toilet construction in village Stepanovka was adopted.
16 December 2005 — "ToR for eco-toilet model design" was
prepared by Tebodin Ukraine and was delivered to MAMA-86 Kyiv.
1st of December 2005 — expert "Socis-Ukraine" conducted
the training for two activists from Stepanovka in Kyiv office on the method
of the mass survey conducting based on the prepared questionnaire.
25th of November 2005 — the preparation of technical documentation
for eco-toilet construction in v. Stepanovka Odesa Oblast was begun.
25th of November 2005 — The design of the ecological toilet building
for the school of v. Stefanovka (Odesa Oblast) was prepared by Stefan Deegner,
engineer of the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg.
15th of November 2005 — the preparation of technical documentation
for eco-toilet construction in summer camp of v. Peredovoe (Crimea) was begun.
27th of October 2005 — MAMA-86 and Tebodin Ukraine — Engineer-Constructor
firm signed the contact as to work on analysis of Ukraine legislation on eco-sanitation
and "ToR for eco-toilet model development" preparing.
19th of October 2005 — MAMA-86-Odesa received the decision "Allocation
of land plots on the bottom of the Kuchurgan river" decreed by the Verhovna
Rada Committee in Environmental Policy of Ukraine.
6 October 2005 — In the framework of the Third International Water
Forum "AQUA Ukraine — 2005" MAMA-86 together with Ukrainian
Water Association held a training "Ecological Sanitation is a New Approach
to the Wastewaters Management" »»».
7th of September 2005 — MAMA-86 hold the meeting of women from village
Stepanovka with Rudenko G. B., Head of the Verhovna Rada Committee in Environmental
Policy of Ukraine in Kiev.
