Long-term objectives of “MAMA-86”
- Contribute substantially to developing a participatory
democracy in Ukraine with citizens, particularly women, who
will be able to defend their right to a healthy and safe environment
and will participate in the political decision making process.
- Develop a strong network of local environmental NGOs which
are skilled and experienced in NGO activities, which have a substantial
influence on the local environment and the health situation and which
help to develop and implement MAMA-86 strategy.
- Create a strong organisational structure for “MAMA-86”, which
allows at the same time to remain independent and to represent the
public interest.
- Promote Ukrainian sustainable products and production
processes, particularly in the area of food and drinking water.
- Create a broad public platform for local sustainable
development with representatives from different sectors/groups
of society to defend and promote strong policies for the improvement
of e.g. health and environment in processes of formulating and
implementing NEHAP and LEHAPs in Ukraine etc.
- Work for the water sector reform implementation in Ukraine paying
special attention to the public involvement and protection of poor
and vulnerable citizens, as well as implement alternative solutions
in order to provide people as soon as possible with access to safe
drinking water.
- Network and cooperate with environment and development
NGOs in NIS countries, Europe and countries of the Northern
Hemisphere in order to strengthen the NGO role in the environmental
policy decision-making.
- Influence the development of an appropriate legislative
framework for NGOs in Ukraine to allow them to operate
transparently without being subject to excessive fiscal charges
and to be able to develop income-generating activities on a non-profit
basis.
- Expand the practical services provided to women and
children that help them improve their health and environment
as a way to teach by example and inspire more women's self-help
and bottom-up activities.
- Survey women's health, social and economic situation in
Ukraine as relevant or as part of other programmes to ensure that
these programmes address women's rights issues where necessary.
- Continue seminars/skill shares within “MAMA-86” network on
the environment, health, public participation, NGOs activities etc.
- Establish publication of a national magazine of “MAMA-86” on
environmental and health issues.
